Absecon Veterinary Hospital's Certification & Accreditation reflects our dedication to maintaining high clinical standards and compassionate support for animals across Atlantic County. Our team works under voluntary credentials that guide our daily operations, ensuring that dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and small mammals receive thoughtful care during every visit. Through regular external evaluations and continuous staff education, we maintain structured standards across all of our departments.
Absecon Veterinary Hospital's
Certification & Accreditation
Our facility maintains accreditation through the American Animal Hospital Association, a distinction we have held for over thirty years. The American Animal Hospital Association is the only organization evaluating companion animal veterinary practices in the United States and Canada. Participation in this program is completely voluntary, requiring our practice to pass assessments covering more than 900 individual standards. These criteria evaluate our medical equipment, laboratory diagnostics, surgical safety measures, patient care protocols, and facility cleanliness. Because these standards are updated regularly to reflect advances in veterinary medicine, our staff engages in ongoing self-assessment to uphold these benchmarks.

Fear Free Practices & Low-Stress Care
We earned our Fear Free Certification in 2022 to address both the physical and emotional wellbeing of our patients. Developed by veterinary behavior experts, Fear Free protocols aim to reduce the stress and anxiety animals may experience during a medical visit. Our doctors and support staff complete specialized training to recognize subtle body language signals indicating fear or discomfort. During examinations, routine vaccinations, and diagnostic procedures, we utilize gentle handling techniques alongside positive reinforcement like peanut butter and treats instead of restraint. To support a calm environment, we offer separate waiting areas for dogs and cats as well as towels treated with calming pheromones.
Cat Friendly Gold Standards
for Feline Patients
To address the unique needs of cats, our practice holds Cat Friendly Practice Gold status through the Feline Veterinary Medical Association. Feline companions often experience heightened stress in unfamiliar environments or near other species. This Gold status verifies that our facility features feline-only spaces, including a cat waiting area, cat exam rooms, a dedicated feline treatment room, and a separate feline hospitalization ward. Our veterinary team undergoes continuous education in feline medicine and low-stress handling to ensure gentle, attentive care.

Medical and Community Services
Cared For Under Our Standards
Our team provides a broad range of medical services designed to support pet health at every stage of life. Our primary care department offers wellness examinations, customized nutrition plans, microchipping, senior care diagnostics, and travel health certificates issued by USDA-accredited veterinarians. We deliver core vaccinations for dogs, including Rabies, DHPP, Kennel Cough, and Leptospirosis, as well as core vaccinations for cats, including Rabies, FeLV, and FVRP. Parasite prevention options like Sentinel Spectrum, Bravecto, and Bravecto Plus help protect pets against external and internal parasites.
Our emergency and urgent care team operates daily from 8 AM to 10 PM to treat acute conditions such as severe vomiting, respiratory distress, toxin exposure, and trauma. Incoming patients undergo triage so that critical cases receive immediate medical attention, with 24-hour nursing care available for hospitalized pets. In surgery, we formulate tailored anesthesia plans based on patient age and history, utilizing pre-surgical blood screening and multimodal pain management throughout each procedure.
Our exotics program provides specialized wellness checks, sick pet evaluations, dietary consultations, and annual RHDV2 vaccines for rabbits, birds, reptiles, and small mammals. We also offer outpatient specialty services, including outpatient echocardiograms with Dr. Eric DeRose, outpatient abdominal ultrasounds with Dr. Kim Hammer, and acupuncture with Dr. Kim Mitchell. For added flexibility, our mobile veterinary unit brings routine wellness, minor illness care, and end-of-life care directly to your residence, while telemedicine consultations are available for select concerns.
We extend these clinical standards into the community through our PAWSitive Impact Program, which hosts free Rabies and Parvovirus vaccine clinics, pet CPR training, disaster response assistance, and monthly pet loss support groups. Financial support is available through our non-profit, Laddie's Legacy, as well as flexible payment options such as Cherry, CareCredit, Scratchpay, and Varidi.
