Over 8,000 of our neighbors have lost their jobs in the past few months and they are about to lose their unemployment benefits. Atlantic County now has the highest unemployment rate of any metropolitan area east of the Rocky Mountains. According to the US Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook, half (50.7 percent) of NJ residents have a pet in their home. So we can assume half of those now unemployed also have a pet in their home.
To assist in addressing this problem, Absecon Veterinary Hospital has opened a pet food pantry in partnership with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey located in Egg Harbor Township. The mission of this project is to ensure that the Food Bank is stocked with pet food and supplies to help pet owners who are existing Food Bank clients meet their beloved animals’ needs to keep families and pets together.
Pets need families and families need pets. Our mission is to keep them together.
